First grade at the Sherman School is an exciting and challenging year. It is the foundation of academic and social lifelong learning. This foundation is built through cooperation of students, parents, teachers, administrators and community. Emphasis is placed on the development of language arts. To ensure success in reading and writing, the learning environment is rich in experiences with oral communications, printed materials, phonics, sight vocabulary, and creative written expression. Mathematics is taught using concrete materials to develop concepts and reasoning, to explore problem solving and to relate these to their daily lives.
