Box Journal
Our January/February reading themes, "Family and Friends" and "Home Sweet Home" emphasize` that writers often use events from their life for topics. We ask the children to decorate a small box (e.g. shoe box) and fill it with small items that are important to them. The "Memory Box" is stored in our classroom. The following is a list of possible mementos items: photos, postcards, collectible items as shells, newspaper clippings, small toys, trophies, souvenirs, etc. The children may choose an item to record their thoughts in a journal. Many children enjoy including an illustration with their recording.
After the completion of our study of wolves, each first grader chooses an unusual animal for research and reports back to his/her classmates.
- Reporting may take the form of:
- 1. diorama
- 2. mask
- 3. mini-book with illustrations
- 4. homemade model
- 5. poster
- 6. design a T-shirt, pillowcase, banner
- 7. puppet
- 8. your own special projects
- Points to be covered:
- 1. species of animal
- 2. appearance as baby and adult
- 3. their basic needs
- 4. ways they move
- 5. habitats
- 6. ways they'll be helpful to humans
- 7. any unusual features
- Each child gives a fifteen minute oral report about their animal. The fifteen minutes includes any questions for our resident expert. The projects will be displayed for viewing at the end of our unit. A Science Expo evening is planned for parents and friends.
