About Mrs.Silva

Mrs. Silva was born and raised in Danbury, CT and now lives in

Brookfield, CT. She went to St. Gregory the Great School and graduated

from Immaculate High School in 1998. She continued her education at

Western Connecticut State University. Mrs. Silva studied

elementary education with a concentrated in American Studies. During

her college career she worked at Costco as a pharmacy technician.

She graduated from WCSU in 2002 and and in 2006 with a Masters in Reading. 

She is now a second grade teacher.

Writing

 

Throughout second grade students will learn how to write
a narrative story. Students will work on:

an entertaining beginning
a description of the setting
suspense leading to the main event
 the main event
 a solution to the problem
an extended ending

Students will also be introduced to the Columbia Writing Project.
Second graders will be writing stories that relate to their daily lives
and sharing their everyday adventures in their writing.

Reading

 

Shared Reading Themes  

Throughout the year students will be reading stories as a class that will
introduce them to many different genres.

Theme 1 - Silly Stories Focus on Poetry

 Theme 2 - Nature Walk Focus on Fables

                     Theme 3 - Around Town: Neighborhood and Community

            Theme 4 - Amazing Animals Focus on Biography

           Theme 5 - Family Time Focus on Chapter Books

                                                                  Theme 6 - Talent Show

Independent Reading/Book Club

Throughout the year students will be reading stories with a partner 
and having discussions with one another about their stories. Students will 
develop their reading comprehension strategies which will help 
them become great thinkers. Students will be meeting with the teacher and
their book clubs for further instruction.

Science
 

 

Nutrition

Students will be taken on a nutrition adventure that will teach them
to make wise food choices and plan a helpful diet using the Food Guide Pyramid.

Soil, Pebbles, Sand and Silt

Students learn to classify rocks by size, shape, color, and texture.
They learn to separate a variety of rock sizes with screens and water.
Soil samples will be collected and the uses of earth materials are explored.
 

Solids, Liquids, and Gases

Students will develop a curiosity and interest in plants as living things.
Students will become familiar with the structures of
flowering plants (roots, stem, leaf, bud, flower, and seed).

Social Studies

Map Skills

The students learn about the businesses that provide goods and services
in a community.
Map key symbols are used to locate and
understand information shown on maps. The cardinal directions
on the compass rose are used to determine directions.

 

History of Sherman

The history of Sherman is studied back to the time of the purchase of
land from the Indians.They look at the changes of the schools,
the post office, the hardware store and the IGA.
Since our town is named for Roger Sherman, information is shared
about his jobs as a surveyor, cobbler, and statesman.
