General Information

The middle school years present as a time of transition for students and their parents. In this context the middle school counseling program works proactively with individuals in both large group developmental guidance and in small classes.

Much of the focus is upon navigating the passage to later adolescence with a sense of respect and responsibility, development of communication and conflict resolution skills, and self-awareness to foster good decision making.

The middle school counselor works closely with teachers, support staff and parents to create a positive and safe learning environment for every member of the Sherman Middle School community.

Developmental Guidance: Personal Wellness

During the course of the year all students meet with Mrs. Brown during Personal Wellness class. Eighth graders assess their life experiences and interests during career exploration. This information helps guide students in their high school selection process.

Seventh graders develop their decision making and time management skills, resistance to substance abuse, tolerance for differences and nutrition awareness.

In sixth grade the focus is conflict resolution, substance abuse prevention and basic first aid.

Fifth graders benefit from developmental guidance lessons Mrs. Brown coordinates with fifth grade teachers. The topics range from the responsibilities of being a student to transition to the sixth grade.

 Responsive Services

The middle school counselor provides special help to students who are facing situations that interfere with their academic success. Students may be referred to counseling by faculty or they may contact Mrs. Brown directly. Some students meet with the school counselor to review progress reports every two weeks. An action plan is developed to improve academic performance.

Parents may also request that their child be seen and are particularly encouraged to inform the counselor of any issues at home that may be affecting their child at school.

System Support

The school counselor works with staff and parents to support the academic efforts of the middle school students. Mrs. Brown consults with the middle school team on a regular basis. She also acts as a liaison among parent, student, and teacher when it is helpful to the situation.
