World Languages: Middle School Spanish

At Sherman School, we believe that learning a second language is a gateway to global citizenship, cultural empathy, and advanced cognitive growth. Led by our dynamic Spanish educator, Señora Butler, our Grades 6–8 Spanish program is a well-integrated, sequential skill-building program designed to stimulate language development and foster a true love and appreciation for the Spanish language and its diverse cultures.

By seamlessly blending academic rigor with joyful expression, our ultimate goal is for students to comfortably communicate at a novice level of proficiency in real-life situations.

Our Approach: Dynamic, Immersive, & Balanced

Señora Butler has designed a comprehensive, highly engaging curriculum where students continually practice speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Our middle schoolers interact with the Spanish language daily through four core pillars of communication:

• Grammar Foundations: Students build a strong structural framework, mastering verb conjugations, sentence mechanics, and tense structures that allow them to formulate their own original thoughts.

• Reading & Comprehension: Through authentic texts, short stories, and cultural articles, students expand their vocabulary and learn to decode context clues.

• Creative Writing: From drafting introductory paragraphs in 6th grade to composing complex narratives in 8th grade, students learn to express their ideas beautifully in writing.

• Active Oral Engagement & Listening: Our classrooms are immersive. Through a variety of unique activities, students are consistently challenged to listen carefully, converse, and collaborate in Spanish, building conversational fluidness and reducing anxiety.

Inspiring Our Youngest Learners: Cultural Celebrations

A defining feature of our program is how our middle schoolers act as cultural mentors for our elementary school community. Throughout the year, upper-grade students design and lead immersive cultural celebrations for younger grades to spread cultural awareness school-wide.

For instance, during Cinco de Mayo, our middle school students step into leadership roles—teaching elementary classes traditional Spanish dances, guiding them through cultural mask-making crafts, and facilitating engaging activities that bring the history and vibrant traditions of the day to life across all grade levels.

A Beloved Sherman Tradition: "Spanish Idol"

A true highlight of our World Language program is our annual Spanish Idol showcase! While this event is a highly anticipated rite of passage, it is not just for our 8th graders—all middle school students have the opportunity to participate. This unique project perfectly marries academic mastery with joyful creativity. Students choose to step into the spotlight by translating, adapting, and writing their own original lyrics to popular songs entirely in Spanish. The experience culminates in a high-energy performance where students showcase their pronunciation, rhythm, and linguistic confidence. It is a brilliant reflection of our motto—Engage, Empower, Excel—in action!

You don't need to speak Spanish to help your child succeed! Here are a few great ways to encourage language acquisition at home:

• Explore Media: Encourage your child to watch their favorite movies or shows with Spanish audio enabled, or listen to popular Spanish-language music playlists together.

• Be the Student: Ask your child to teach you three new vocabulary words or phrases they learned in Señora Butler's class each week.

• Connect with Culture: Explore international foods, music, traditions, and geography together to support the cultural components taught in the classroom.
