COURSE GOALS & OBJECTIVES:
The Sherman School World Language Program is a well-integrated and sequential skill-building program. The ultimate goal of the World Language program at Sherman is for students to be able to communicate at a novice level of proficiency. Students will continually practice speaking, listening, reading, and writing through a variety of unique and engaging activities. The World Language curriculum is designed to stimulate language development by fostering skills of communication in real-life situations and by introducing the students to the study of relevant cultural topics. Most importantly, sixth, seventh and eighth grade students of the Spanish program will be inspired and encouraged to communicate in Spanish, and to develop a love and appreciation for the Spanish language and its respective cultures.
GRADING SYSTEM FOR 6TH, 7TH & 8TH GRADE
Students will be assessed on the four modes of communication:
speaking, writing, reading, and listening.
They will also have assessments on vocabulary and grammar concepts.
SPEAKING: Speaking assessments demonstrate the student’s ability to communicate a message in the target language. Students will speak spontaneously on a related topic, communicate interpersonally with classmates, and in some cases give oral presentations.
QUIZZES & TESTS: Quizzes and tests demonstrate a student’s ability to apply grammar concepts and new vocabulary. Students will also be assessed on their ability to interpret short readings, videos, and audio clips in Spanish.
WRITING: Writing assessments demonstrate the student’s ability to write organized, accurate, comprehensible, and rich responses to a given prompt in Spanish.
READING & LISTENING: Reading and listening assessments evaluate the students’ ability to interpret both aural and written texts.
HOMEWORK:
Although homework it is not part of the grading system, written, speaking, and listening homework as well as online quizzes will be assigned regularly. Online quizzes (quia quizzes) will count as a grade.
