Areas of focus in 4th Grade Math

Students focus intensively on the three critical areas specified by the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics in Grade Four:
  • Developing understanding and fluency with multi-digit multiplication, and developing understanding of dividing to find quotients involving multi-digit dividends.
  • Developing an understanding of fraction equivalence, addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators, and multiplication of fractions by whole numbers.
  • Understanding that geometric figures can be analyzed and classified based on their properties, such as having parallel sides, perpendicular sides, particular angle measures, and symmetry.

4th Grade Scope and Sequence

What's Going on in 4th Grade Social Studies
In 4th grade we study the regions of the United States. We focus on land, economy, history, and landmarks of our great nation.  We start the year discovering the Northeast and work our way across the country visiting the South, Midwest, and the West.  Along the way we study the following topics in depth: Immigration, Our State of Connecticut, Government, and Our Nation's Capital-Washington, D.C.

At home, you can:

Encourage your child to write in their Writer's Notebook. Make sure they are bringing that notebook to and from school each day. That notebook is necessary for class! Any topic that your child wishes to write about is great! Just encourage them to write!
