Classroom Overview

English Language Arts
The focus of language arts in first grade is to instill a love of reading and writing in our students. Reading, writing, spelling and phonics are the basic building blocks that guide instruction. We use the Reading and Writing Workshop model which allows the first graders many opportunities to read and write throughout the day. During the year students are taught strategies to decode, understand, and respond to both informational and narrative texts. In writing, the first graders learn to write three different genres - narrative, informational and opinion.

Math
Come get your hands dirty with first grade math. Dig into addition signs, bury yourself under equals, and find your way out of story problems. The adventures of first grade math include telling time, counting money, sorting shapes, fractions, measuring, addition, subtraction, and most importantly problem solving.
